KES BUYING GUIDE

Can self-adhesive vinyl flooring be laid over existing tiles?

Check tile stability, grout lines, moisture and surface preparation before laying self-adhesive PVC vinyl over old tiles.

It depends on the condition of the tiled floor

Existing tiles are not automatically a suitable base. The surface must be clean, dry, flat and stable. Check for loose, cracked or hollow tiles, uneven edges and damp patches. Resolve these problems before deciding whether to install vinyl.

Check grout lines and height changes

Deep grout joints and uneven tile edges may prevent full contact or show through thin vinyl. Check the surface with a straightedge and inspect door clearance. Any repair or levelling material must be suitable for the existing base and adhesive system, and fully prepared according to its instructions.

Clean thoroughly and check preparation requirements

Remove dust, oil, wax and cleaning residue. Do not stick over a crumbling, dusty or damp surface. Confirm whether primer or other preparation is required for your tile finish and the supplied product. Do not assume a glossy tile is ready simply because it looks clean.

Inspect and test before covering the whole room

Send KES clear photos of the base and grout lines if unsure. Follow the supplied product instructions and confirm preparation before installation. Thickness alone does not solve an uneven floor, and these checks do not establish suitability for bathrooms or permanently wet areas.

Measure after planning the base

Once preparation is confirmed, measure the area and use the box calculator. Each box covers 54 sqft, approximately 5.02 m². Select your design and order on the website after confirming your measurements and preparation plan.
